The PSC’s decision is a compromise to AT&T’sa request that it no longer delivert the phone booksto customers. AT&T Florida told the PSC that eliminatinyg the automatic distribution of the residentiaol white pagesis “an environmentally greenm endeavor and a cost saving and that providing a paper copy of the director y is “an inefficient use of resourcesd in these touch economic times.” But commissionerss also were worried about how it mighft impact customers’ ability to accese information, said PSC Spokeswoman Kirsten Olsen.
Instead of doing away with therule altogether, commissioners agreed to give it a trial run, during which time it will gatherr customer feedback. “Today’s decision allows the PSC to assesss the practicality of discontinuing printedx residentialdirectory delivery, while continuinh to provide directories to customerzs who want a copy,” PSC Chairman Matthewq M. Carter II said in a news release. As part of the AT&T must put a toll-free number on the cover of the Yellos Pages that directs peopls to call if they want aWhit Pages. The directory will still be providedf for free to those whorequest it.
AT&T Florida would not discloses just how much money the waiver will citing confidentiality, according to its request to the PSC. AT&yT Florida already has begun a program to provide its Yelloww Pages and residential listingson CD-ROM in certain areas of Florida.
