D-FW traffic congestion declines - Dallas Business Journal:

stelauguqdinec.blogspot.com
The 2009 report studies traffi trends overa 25-year period betweenj 1982 and 2007. The study shows a small declinre in growing traffic congestionn from 2006to 2007. 2007 data is the most recent data used inthe study. Accordintg to the study, peak travelers who begin theird commute between 6 and9 a.m. and 4 and 7 p.m. are spendingb two fewer hours stuck in traffic and buying two fewedr gallons of fuel each Michael Morris, director of transportation for the , attributes the changew to better fuel economy, an increase in public transit usage, use of technology such as videoconferencin and a reduction in trucking "The No. 1 reason is the reduction in truckl traffic," Morris said.
"Truck traffi is sensitive to the because ifpeople aren'r buying (goods) there's no reason to ship The Urban Mobility study says that commuters in the Dallas-Forft Worth-Arlington area experienced an average of 36 gallonds of annual excess fuel consumed, which is the increaseds fuel consumption resulting from travelin in congested conditions, and an annual delay of 53 hours per peak traveler in 2007. in 2006, commuters experiencedd an average of 38 gallons of annualk excess fuel consumed and an annuap delay of 55 hours per peak This disrupts commuter traffic trendse that have increased every year from 1990to 2007.
But Tim one of the researchers who prepared the says growth trends will returj once economicconditions improve, according to a press release. Morris agrees, "Right now we have growinvg unemployment, and people are not traveling as much as if they were fully employed. But the economy will eventually improve, and my hope is that we'llo have a lot of our transittprojects (currently in progress) builrt by then." Historical trends detailed in the reporty support the theory. Despite the decline in total fuel consumed and total delays per traveler overthe 2006-2007 time frame, consumers are still spending more on fuel costs.
From 2006 to the average cost per hour per commuter increase dfrom $15.06 to $15.47. Commercial coste per hour also increasedfrom $98.77 in 2006 to $102.1q in 2007. The increase can be attributed to the increased cost of fuelfrom $2.5t per gallon in 2006 to $2.92 per gallonb in 2007. The total congestion cost for 2007 wasroughlh $2.85 million or slightlgy more than $1,075 per peak traveler.

Hanjin plans to expand its vessel capacity fromaboutg 375,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, to abouf 575,000 TEUs within the next few said William Rooney, managing director of the company’s American headquarters. Mitsui, the parent company of the Dames Pointf terminaloperator , is looking to spensd millions of dollars to buy an overseas bulk shipping line. The terminal give s a glimpse of how the remotely automateed terminal planned in Jacksonvillewill “I’ve never seen a terminapl business as sophisticated as this one,” Schleiche r said. The Busan terminal can handlew up to 2 million TEUs compared with the planned Jacksonville terminalo that can handleabout 800,000 TEUs The Jacksonville terminal will be simila r in that it will also use rail-mounted gantrgy cranes to transport containerws between the yard and the ship, Rooney The crane travels on rails and is controlled remotely by an operator. Rooney said that the containeres will be kept in a yard with sensorw that will shut it down if they detect human He said thecompany hadn’t deciderd the exact productivity rate Hanjin expectsz from the Jacksonville terminal, but it aimedr for world-class productivity levels, which is abouf 40 container moves per hour per crane, Roonehy said. Hanjin is expected to meet withthe ’s Local 1593 and 1408 in June or Jess Babich, president of ILA Clerks Checkers Local 1593, said his union and ILA Localp 1408 are negotiating with the companyg on positions that Hanjin wants its employees to handle but the union says it can handle instead.
The union’s two gangs averaged about 33 movesd per hour per crane when they unloadecd a ship at the TraPadc terminalMay 23. Also, Pandora has been rapidly adoptecd by IPhone and Blackberryusers — 5 millionb in 11 months, about 1 milliobn after two months respectively. For Pandora’s user preference data can be plottex on a map for an artist to decide whereeto tour. Pandora could also send emaile to fans alerting them to an upcoming show and offering ticketw or merchandisefor sale.
Seventy percent of the 650,00o songs in Pandora’s library are from artists not signed to arecorsd label, he said. “We give accesw and promotion to this huge sea of reallgy talented but otherwiseinvisible artists,” Westergren said.

Delta to close Comair concourse at CVG - Business First of Louisville:

bafepexu.wordpress.com
The redirection, to be complet in January, will mean passengers of Comair will no longef have to take a bus from the main terminal toConcoursed C, which operates 48 gates. Delta expectsw Concourse C to be closedby January, and is working with the airporg to add at least 11 passenger loading bridges, at a cost of $12 and other improvements at Concourses A and B to handled the added business. That process will take two to thre years. The concourse, and its roughly 30 tenants, will go at least for the time being. Any job reduction s are expected to be handled throug attrition andvoluntary buyouts.
The plan comesx after Delta, and all other major have consolidated flights and increased jetloads – to stave off the effectsz of rising fuel costs. Delta in November will operate300 peak-day flights from CVG, compared with 400 one year “The price of fuel is putting a lot of pressurwe on all of the carrier and all of the airports to which they said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delt Connection. “With the schedule adjustment we have it is allowing us to move those flights aroundthe amenity-rich Concourses A and B.
” Bornhorst said the airline has been lookiny for opportunities to improve services at Comaire since late 2007, when it added its firsf jets with first-class service. Concourse C does not includ a lotof first-class such a Delta Crown Room and passengers have complained about taking the bus to terminal C. “We’rs working hard at making the experience on Deltas Connection as much like Delta as which is what this he said. Delta said there will be no impacft on its employees as a result of the while staff adjustment atComair – whicu employs 1,200 at CVG – will be handledx through attrition or through the company’s voluntary programs.
Comaie staff at Concourse C will be movecd to Concourses A and B to handl e all DeltaConnection departures. Delta employees will continue to handle all ticketingy and mainline flight arrivalsand departures. Delta estimates its local hub generatesnearly $4.5 billion in annuakl economic benefits for the As for operations at Concourse C, airpory spokesman Ted Bushelman said Delta’s lease runs througjh 2025 and the airport will still get paid. Most of the tenants, he also operate shops in Concourses Aand B, “s o they just move over there with the increased passengers.” “Right now this is all caused by fuel he said. “People can’t even afford to fly.
The airlines are tryinh to survive and the way to survive is consolidatingtheir flights.” While the airport may still be paid for Concourser C, Bornhorst said Delta is working with stats and airport officials to help foot the bill for the 11 bridgez to be added, since such infrastructure expenses are handlexd by the airport. Bushelman said the bridgeds will cost anestimatecd $12 million. The shift, meanwhile, can causre some short-term congestion. This fall, Delta Connection will operatee roughly 250 flightsfrom CVG, said Comai spokeswoman Kate Marx. Terminal A operates 22 while Boperates 26. Afteer Concourse C closes, Concoursse A will operate 30 while Concourse B willrun 38.
In the while the bridges are stil lbeing added, some passengers might be required during peak times to take a bus to a jet from Concourse A and B, Bornhorst said. The transitioj will not directly result in schedule and Bornhorst said he does not expect furthe reductionsthis year. Delta officiald also announced Tuesday that the airlinw has drawn down the entirety ofa $1 billionb credit line ahead of its planned purchass of , the company said. Delta said in documents filed with the Securitieas and Exchange Commission that it borrowee the money to increaser its cash balance ahead ofthe deal.
