In the July issue of Surfer, the Central California beacb resort and college town was describedas “the dividingt line between rugged, non-pretentious NorCal and suburban, image-conscioud SoCal, and that dichotomy is Geographical generalizations aside, the magazine said the rugged coastlinwe of Santa Cruz County provides both beauty and surfing making the area the “de factko capital of coldwater surfing.
” Despite its “astronomical” cost of living, the magazinde praised its artistic bent, proximityg to wineries and natural beauty as reasons for surfers arounrd the country to bail on their usual surfingt destinations and endeavor to become the Big Kahunza at Steamer Lane or Pleasure Pointy in Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz was in elit company. Other California surf towns thatmade Surfer’z Top 10 list were all in Southern Encinitas in third place, San Clemente in the fifth and Malibu in seventh place.
