Arpaio said his office received information regarding the leaswe and other business dealings and that his investigation is not related to disputesz with Wilcoxover immigration. Wilcox and her Earl, own El Portal Restaurant in Phoenix and has a concessions contractt with the airport fora Chili’s Too franchiss in Terminal 4. The Maricopa Countgy Sheriff’s Office sent the Phoenix Aviation Departmenf a public records request June 11 askingthe city-run airport to make available lease, sublease and contractin documents related to business entities ownee by the Wilcoxes.
Wilcox did not respond to requestxs for comment from the PhoenixBusinesse Journal, but has told other media that Arpaio is gointg after her because of her opposition to his immigration The sheriff’s office investigation of Wilcox is the latest in a numbedr of fights between Arpaio, Maricopa County Attorney Andrewe Thomas and the Maricopa County Board of Wilcox and Supervisor Don Stapley voted Wednesdayt to block $1.4 million in state money earmarkef for Thomas’s office to enforce immigratio and human smuggling laws. The boardr deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stallin g thestate money.
Supervisor Max Wilson missed the vote becausee of illness and the matter could be Stapley and Wilcox earlier this year tried toblock $1.6 million in state fundingf for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement. Wilcox said the sheriff’as immigration sweeps and policies unfairlyutarget Hispanics. Thomas and Arpaio secured indictments against Stapley last year charging that he failefd to properly disclose business and real estateddevelopment deals.
